2013-02-09_DARCH & YEAS Sandcastles Competition Winners

Last Saturday marked the inaugural DARCH/YEAS Sandcastle Competition at Tamarama Beach – in which architects and engineers went head to head to craft an outstanding home for our client Harold, the media mogul cockroach whose aspirations include living-it-large at Tamarama Beach.

After having to postpone the previous set date the weather on the day was perfect, hitting a sunny 30 degrees. Five teams competed, providing entertainment in the form of sand slump tests, stolen formwork, and flip-flop smoothing techniques amongst others. 3 hours of construction culminated in the winning castle – a Gaudi-inspired cockroach scale house atop a rather morbid coffin-shaped cockroach gravesite.

A big thank-you to our Judges on the day; Joe Snell of Snell Architects and Engineer Sumeer Gohil, thank you to EmAGN for the funding support and thank you to the YEAS team for all of their co-organisational help. Overall the day was a lot of fun, and DARCH looks forward to collaborating on more events with YEAS in the year to come.

First place: Architects: Daniel Griffin, Halima Begum, John Rowley

Second place: Engineers: Lisa Granqvist, Hugh Miller, Hannah Mahony-Hayes and Christoph Angehrn

Third place: Architects: Dijana Tasevska, Antoinette Cano, Georgina Blix, Lyndsey Seddon,  Nicole Larkin
